A remarkable day.

April 11, 2009 by picturesclerk

With the help of Wasfy, I arranged in advance to temporarily take over a street vendor’s cart. Wasfy is a friend of the family and a Cairene taxi driver.

I had bought a second-hand gellabiyya of heavy blue cotton. The weather was humid after a brief downpour of rain.

Although I knew very little about selling ful on the street, I assembled two sandwiches of mashed bean and a little salt. I gave one to Wasfy and the other to the vendor whose cart I was borrowing.

I tried to affect an existential displacement inside Cairo; for example ful made in the Iraqi style. I came away with one picture, which I think turned out quite nicely.
